the Artificial intelligence (AI) ChatGPT chatbot It will be blocked in Italy for data protection reasons. The country’s data protection authority said on Friday that the app’s developer, US company OpenAI, is only allowed to process data of Italian internet users “with immediate effect” to a limited extent. ChatGPT has not complied with the data protection and youth protection rules.
ChatGPT generates texts with the help of artificial intelligence. Users can specify individual commands or sentences, which the system then completes independently using massive amounts of data from the Internet.
The Italian authority is particularly critical that OpenAI has no legal basis for the large-scale collection and storage of personal data. There is also a lack of measures to protect minors, for example there is no age limit for minors.
The US company must now “report within 20 days on the actions taken,” the authority said. Otherwise, there is a risk of “a fine of up to 20 million euros or up to four percent of annual turnover”.
ChatGPT is very successful, but the caveats have been piling up lately. This week, for example, the police agency Europol reported that Criminals and scammers can take advantage of the app. A chatbot can provide information such as “How to break into a home, including terrorism, cybercrime, and pedophilia.”
