American Sports: This embarrassment is second to none

When March Madness begins on Tuesday, the Tar Heels, one of college basketball’s most successful teams, will be absent. Their failure has historical proportions.

It’s already begun, and now one of American college basketball’s biggest sensations is perfect: The Tar Heels, a University of North Carolina team that’s not only highly decorated in athletics, has been denied participation in the annual Finals (March 14 through April 3). Missed.

Coach Hubert Davis’s team was practically shut down after losing 59:68 to the Virginia Cavaliers in the regional tournament quarterfinals last Friday, and a mediocre record of 20:13 wasn’t enough to set the bar higher.

Former NBA star Davis — who reached the 1994 Finals with the New York Knicks about Patrick Ewing — said, “It just doesn’t feel good. It just doesn’t live up to the expectations we had at the beginning of the year. It was definitely frustrating and disappointing.”

The last hope of participating in the hugely popular final round, which is not for nothing called March Madness, was dashed on the so-called “Selection Sunday”.

In addition to the 32 automatically qualified teams, the other 36 teams are selected by a selection committee, which also makes its selection based on sporting criteria. But even there, the Tar Heels missed approval, albeit a very narrow one.

The disappointment seemed so great that the college also declined an invitation to the National Invitation Tournament. The tournament features some teams that failed to qualify for March Madness.

“We think it’s time to prepare for next season and take the opportunity to compete for the NCAA Tournament again,” said Coach Davis.

The Tar Heels want to avoid another embarrassment like this year at all costs.
