Scandal in a Russian hotel. A Norwegian diplomat rants about her opinion of the Russians. She seems to be waiting for a clean room in vain. Between Moscow and Oslo there is now thick air.
Elisabeth Ellingsen, a Norwegian consul stationed in Murmansk in northern Russia, is causing diplomatic problems between Moscow and Oslo. A video clip shows Ellingsen insulting hotel staff. It seems that cleaning her room “took too long”.
“I hate Russians,” Ellingen said in English. Just give me a room. You know, I’m used to staying in clean rooms. I come from Scandinavia, not just a Russian.”
The video, posted by media group Mash, went viral on the Internet – and quickly caused a backlash. The Russian Foreign Ministry said a “reaction to this outrageous act of hatred, nationalism and xenophobia” was being considered.
Russophobia does not tolerate
The governor of the Murmansk region, Andrei Shebes (43), warned on Telegram not to tolerate Russophobia. Russian Senator Andrei Klishas, 49, denounced the Norwegian as “scum”.
The Norwegian Foreign Ministry said it “deeply regrets” the incident: “The feelings expressed do not reflect Norwegian policy or Norway’s position towards Russia and the Russian people,” according to a statement. The incident will be handled “through appropriate channels”.
According to the website of the Norwegian Embassy in Moscow, the Norwegian Consulate General in Murmansk has been closed since July 1. The reason: the “difficult” situation in bilateral relations. It is unclear whether the incident occurred before or after the consulate was temporarily closed. (bag)
