Since landing on the Red Planet in February, NASA scientist Ken Farley said Wednesday (local time), the craft has moved 1 km south and is now in an area with much older rocks. There he should collect rock samples.
The perseverance robot is located in the Jezero crater. Scientists believe that about 3.5 billion years ago a deep lake emptied and refilled several times over time and provided suitable conditions for organic life.

Samples are sent to Earth
The samples collected by the probe are sent back to Earth. They must be examined for their chemical and mineral composition to see if the rocks are of volcanic origin or are sedimentary rocks. In addition, persistence must look for potential clues to past microbes. (SDA)
