Lana Del Rey, Doja Cat and the iconic Tyler lead the lineup at the iconic Coachella festival. There are some names that might surprise you at first, but they are all streaming giants.
“This is the weakest lineup I've ever seen at Coachella,” read the top comment on an Instagram post with the 2024 program for the prestigious festival in the California desert published on Tuesday. Hundreds of users write similar things, some justifying their frustration by saying they don't know many verbs.
Indeed, names quickly come to mind that mean to mainstream Western audiences – and perhaps also to many from the alternative angle – such as the relative drink prices of Coachella organizers (a small drink costs the equivalent of 23 francs). However, these acts are by no means anonymous and do not need to hide behind streams and the reach of headliners – they simply inspire other music scenes.
Here are five of them.
Beso Bluma: the Latin star
Spotify Monthly Listeners: 56.1 million
Instagram followers: 12.9 million
Behind Bad Bunny, but ahead of Karol G: in the USA, Peso Pluma is the second most successful Latin act of 2023, and in his native Mexico, no one is currently being streamed more than him. Featuring an appearance on Eslabon Armado's single “Ella Baila Sola”, the 24-year-old spent eight weeks in the Swiss charts last year and reached No. 25.
Le Seraphim: The Takeover of K-Pop
Spotify Monthly Listeners: 13.1 million
Instagram followers: 7.6 million
In 2023, K-pop giants Blackpink played a triumphant headline at Coachella. In 2024, there will be a small feast for fans of premium South Korean pop music in the form of Le Sserafim, which has only been active since 2022 and is already one of the biggest girl groups in the genre. Seoul bands Ateez and The Rose brought more K-pop to the festival in Indio, California.
Ludmila: Brazilian Beyoncé
Spotify Monthly Listeners: 16.8 million
Instagram followers: 30.3 million
Her role model is Beyoncé, which is why Ludmila called herself MC Beyoncé at the beginning of her career more than ten years ago. In 2020, the R&B singer became the first Afro-Latino American to reach 1 billion streams on Spotify. And in 2023, the 28-year-old had one Veil appearance In the testosterone extravaganza “Fast X”: At her signal, a drag race begins in her hometown of Rio de Janeiro.
Dom Dolla: Housetralian
Spotify Monthly Listeners: 7.2 million
Instagram followers: 634000
The 32-year-old is one of Australia's fastest swinging house wrecking balls and has played at every major dance music venue from Tomorrowland to EDC Las Vegas and the Ultra Music Festival. Two years ago, Dom Dolla performed at the Desert Tent at Coachella – is it including a big outdoor stage this time?
Young Miko: Trap Kicker
Spotify Monthly Listeners: 28 million
Instagram followers: 6.5 million
It's impossible to have a boring conversation with a Latin rapper: Young Mico played soccer for Puerto Rico's U-17 and U-20 national teams and worked as a tattoo artist for four years to keep herself afloat in the early days of her music career. Today she works with pop greats like Marshmello, Karol G and J Balvin and is one of the brightest shooting stars on her home island.
Coachella 2024 will take place April 12-14 and April 19-21. You can also participate from Switzerland via live broadcast on YouTube.
