Gregor Deswandin and archers around Nina Christen are guaranteed more medals at the European Games. Duelists hardly miss this.
Surrounded by summer sports, figure skating players also get a chance at the European Games in Poland. And from a Swiss point of view, it worked: Gregor Deschwanden took bronze in the normal hill jump event in Zakopane.
The 32-year-old from Lucerne finished second after the first run, but fell behind Jan Hørle on his second jump. Together with gold medalist Daniel Chovenig, he celebrated a double win for Austria. Swiss Kilian Pierre II ranked himself 20th.
The fourth medal for Christians
Swiss shooters continue to ride the wave of success. In the 50m rifle three-place event, Nina Kristen, Sarina Hitz and Kiara Leon won the silver medal. After the trio won the qualifiers, the Norwegian team had to admit defeat in the final.
After three gold medals (individual, mixed and team), this was Kristen’s fourth medal win at the European Games.
Fencers only miss out on a medal
The Swiss duelists had to settle for a thankless fourth place, just like last year. In Kraków, Poland, the Swiss quad with Pauline Brunner, sisters Aurore, Angeline Favre and Noemi Mauchlin lost the European Championships bronze medal battle to Italy by 33:37.
The last medal for the Swiss women’s team was in 2009. The men’s sprint team competition takes place on Friday.
Beach soccer team in the semi-finals
The Swiss national beach soccer team lost the third group match against Italy 3:5, but still qualified for the semi-finals and thus plays for medals.
Meanwhile, the national team was 4-1 behind the Italians and was on the verge of elimination from the tournament. Thanks to a deliberate effort in the final third, Angelo Chirenzi’s side scored two decisive goals (in succession) that were enough to qualify for the semi-finals. In the semifinals on Friday, Switzerland will meet Portugal, and then Italy will meet Spain.
