Thousands of homes in the UK were hit by traffic jams and power outages on Saturday night due to storms and snowfall. On a highway in northwestern England, about 120 trucks were stuck in the snow for several hours, Northwest Motorway Police announced on Twitter.
Tens of thousands of homes in the north of the UK were without electricity. 55,000 customers have been affected, mostly in the northern parts of Northumberland and County Durham, according to the Northern Powergrid application. Many rail links were cut off in Scotland. Scotrail encouraged its customers to avoid travel as much as possible.
Emergency services reported a large number of operations, for example fallen trees or damaged roofs. At least two people were killed when trees fell on them.
According to the Meteorological Office, a storm called “Arven” sometimes reached speeds of up to 100 miles per hour (160 kilometers per hour). The highest warning level has now been lifted, but the weather warnings continued into Saturday.
