The winner of the WTA 250 Championship in Linz is Alison Riske. She defeated American Jacqueline Christian of Romania 2:6 6:4 7:5 in the final of the $235,238 Lucky Lucerne Senior Austrian Women’s Championship on Friday night. For her third overall title, her first success since 2019, Risk earned €23,548 and with 280 points she will improve significantly from 73rd place.
With success in the first duel, Risk prevented another surprise win in Linz after 2019. Two years ago Cory Gauff (USA) triumphed, this year Christian had also slipped to center court after a qualifying defeat after a player withdrew. After her compatriot Simona Halep (2) was injured, she reached the final for the first time without a fight.
The underdog (WTA-100.) dominated the first set with powerful punches, before Riske got better in the match and hit a crucial set. After breaking to 3:2 and 4:3, she had to give up her serve, but took the serve again from her opponent at 6:5 and then used her first match point in the eleventh final of her career.
The future of the Linz Championship is uncertain
Tournament director Sandra Richelle announced that there will be “internal consultations” about the future of the tournament. “There are a few open questions, such as time or location due to the construction site in the adjacent stadium,” said Upper Austria. A decision must be made in January.
