China’s empty houses can accommodate more than 90 million people
The Middle Kingdom relied on real estate as an engine of economic growth. The result of this are many ghost towns.
In less than a minute, 15 skyscrapers vanished, crushed by 85,000 controlled explosions. The southwest China city of Kunming ditched the Sunshine City 2 apartment complex in August. The equivalent of 140 million francs has melted into the dust.
The buildings have been empty since 2013 after the builders went bankrupt and structural defects were discovered. The Kunming Daily reported that a “cityscape scar” had finally been removed.
There are many such scars, called ghost towns, in the People’s Republic of China. The buildings and neighborhoods of skyscrapers are often in good condition, surrounded by streets up to six lanes. But only: there is hardly anyone.
