21 students from Obersberg Comprehensive School in Bad Herzfeld (GSO) along with their teachers Louisa Schmels, Caroline Hill and Cindy Wink went back to the UK as part of a student exchange with a partner school. GSO students stayed with their exchange partners and their families for a week, experiencing everyday English life and culture up close.
It was a long-awaited reunion with English exchange partners who were guests at Bad Hersfeld in December. Now they were guests abroad. A partnership with Comberton Village College (CVC) near Cambridge dates back to 2008. Due to overwhelming interest, students from Camborne Village College, another school in the local school association, took part again this year.
On the first day, GSO students got to know everyday English school life in two different schools. Apart from the reception of the respective Headmasters and a tour of the schools, attendance at the classes was also on the agenda.
But not only school activities but also cultural activities were the focus of exchange with England. So the group traveled to nearby Cambridge. The program includes a tour of the historic city center and a visit to King's College.
An exciting weekend
After an exciting weekend at the host families with activities such as football games, ice skating, shopping, birthday parties and trips to London, Oxford, Stonehenge or Harry Potter World, a first day trip to London was on the agenda on Monday. After about a 90-minute drive to Greenwich, London, the excursion began with a boat ride on the Thames from Greenwich to Big Ben, passing many sights the students knew only from their English textbooks, such as Catty Sark and Tower Bridge. Or the London Eye.
A walk past other sights such as Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace and Piccadilly Circus rounded out the cultural section of the day, and then students had time to go shopping near the famous Oxford Street.
This year's group flew back to London the next day. While visiting the Tower of London, students not only learned about the tower's long and sometimes bloody history, but also admired the crown jewels of the English royal family and the legendary ravens, which they already knew from their 6th grade English book.
On a scavenger hunt
The last day of the exchange with England was games, play and fun at Camborne. Divided into groups, English and German students teamed up on scavenger hunts through the school and played typical English ball games. A farewell party in Camborne in the evening received a lot of positive feedback from host parents, teachers, students and guests, and plans are already being made for visits. (evening) +++
