  • Coco Gauff swept Jelena Ostapenko off the field in the quarterfinals of the US Open in just 67 minutes and reached her first semifinal in New York.

The quarter-finals starting Tuesday

  • Coco Gauff (USA/WTA 6) Jelena Ostapenko (Latin/WTA 21) 6:0, 6:2

A rude awakening for Jelena Ostapenko: After the Latvian upset world number one Iga Swiatek in the round of 16, her US Open journey ended in the quarterfinals. Against Coco Gauff, Ostapenko was far from her level, especially in the first set that lasted just 20 minutes. The 2017 French Open winner has never won a match. In the second round there were at least two more, one of which came when her opponent was serving. In total, the Latvian committed 36 unforced errors against the steady American.

The 19-year-old Goff reached the semifinals for the first time at Flushing Meadows. “It feels great, I’m very happy. “Last year I lost in the quarter-finals, and this time I really wanted to make it happen,” the young American said and talked about the special challenge against Ostapenko, known for her powerful attacking play. “I didn’t feel comfortable the whole match, even at match point.”

In the semi-finals, Gauff will face the winner of the match between Czech Karolina Muchova, who qualified for the French Open final, and Romanian Sorana Cirstea, who defeated Belinda Bencic.
