UK records record number of Channel crossings – EURACTIV.com

More than 600 migrants attempted to cross the English Channel on Sunday. This is the highest number in 2023, according to the latest data from the Home Office on Monday.

About 616 people were found crossing in twelve small boats. So far in 2023, the number of migrants who have crossed the English Channel is 8,380.

British illegal immigration legislation aims to stop these types of small boat crossings. The law provides that asylum applications can be canceled if refugees enter the UK by unauthorized means, such as crossing the English Channel by boat.

“The government has gone a step further by introducing legislation to ensure that people who enter the UK illegally are detained and immediately deported to their home country or a safe third country,” the Home Office said in the UK’s latest press release on the issue in January.

On Sunday, the All-Party Joint Committee on Human Rights released a report on illegal immigration legislation.

In his analysis, he wrote that the evidence not only shows that the bill is “not the right approach” but will “ultimately affect the UK’s role in a global refugee protection system based on international co-operation”. And… in terms of shared responsibility, no play.

Last week, EU interior ministers reached what was described as a historic agreement on the asylum system, which would, among other things, provide relief to countries of first arrival such as Italy and Greece.
