German star chef Alphonse Schopbeck, 73, has to go to prison. The Munich First District Court sentenced the owner of the TV restaurant on Thursday to three years and two months in prison without probation for tax evasion.
The other defendant was sentenced to a year’s probation for being an dependent. The court stayed with Shohbek based on requests from the plaintiffs who requested it for a period of four years and two months. Schuhbeck’s defense attorneys defended a suspended sentence. The Public Prosecutor’s Office also demanded a suspended sentence against the other defendants.
Smuggled income through the tax office
The attorney general had accused Shopbek of using a computer program to smuggle revenue through the tax office. In total, there are more than 2.3 million euros in taxes Schuhbeck is said to have evaded between 2009 and 2015 in Orlando and Südtiroler Stuben.
“I know what I did was wrong,” Chopik said in his final speech to the court. He can no longer change that, but he can try to repair the damage and take responsibility for his actions. Previously, Schuhbeck’s staff also sent a letter to the court, which I also read.
Schuhbeck reported technical difficulties
The restaurateur largely admitted the allegations, but stated that he could not remember certain events and amounts. He asked the court to certify him “that the amount of voided bills in ‘Südtiroler Stuben’ was not as high as it has hitherto been charged”. Authorities assume that more than 1,000 invoice numbers have disappeared. However, Schuhbeck also reported technical difficulties in entering invoices.
He had “urgently” asked the court to “monetically review the amount of the canceled bills”, but at the same time admitted: “Unfortunately, I am no longer able to provide any other documents for this purpose. (SDA)
