A strong earthquake struck off the southern coast of the US state of Alaska.
The responsible US authority gave the USGS Force 8.2.
The US Meteorological Service (NOAA) issued a tsunami warning, but it was lifted about three hours later.
According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred Wednesday evening (local time) 104 kilometers southeast of the town of Perryville, located on a peninsula, at a depth of 32 kilometers. The National Weather Service initially reported a magnitude of 8.1 and then also corrected it to 8.2, but located the quake 121 kilometers southeast of the city of Chinyk, which is also on the peninsula. There were no indications of injuries or serious damage.
Alaska is a very sparsely populated area of the United States. She had frequent tremors. The state seismological observatory measures a tremor every 15 minutes on average. Most of them are not felt by the population.
However, at the end of November 2018, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake and more than 200 aftershocks caused extensive property damage in southern Alaska. There were no deaths.
