After a fall on his shoulder, Mark Cavendish has to prematurely end his last Tour de France without winning the 35th stage.
Mark Cavendish’s farewell performance at the Tour de France did not have a happy ending. The runner in the eighth stage, about 64 km before the finish, fell on his right shoulder and had to leave the race in the ambulance with a broken collarbone. This means that the 38-year-old will not only achieve the stage record.
Cavendish competed in the 110th Tour de France in order to become the only Tour de France record holder with a thirty-fifth stage win. He shares the record with Belgian cycling icon Eddy Merckx. On Friday, Cavendish narrowly missed the record to finish second in Bordeaux. The Brit ends his career at the end of the season.
