The world of Freemasonry remains alien to many today: some critics accuse the lodges of behaving in an elitist and opaque manner and of cultivating a cult that surrounds its secrecy. These emerged 300 years before the spirit of the Enlightenment: Freethinkers sought freedom and brotherhood beyond all class and sectarian boundaries.

The rulers and princes of the church in these circles soon became suspicious of their seemingly religious rituals. And because Freemasons had to be careful about discretion in the face of retaliatory threats, those who fought for more openness became closed societies themselves.
Where can conspiracy myths lead
A plaque on Herrenstrasse now commemorates the suppression of Freemasonry during the Nazi era. That’s fine, because it shows where conspiracy myths can lead in extreme cases. Even before the Nazi era, Freemasons were accused of being evil secret societies bent on world domination. An almost logical conclusion was that during the Nazi era lodges that were oriented towards humanity were persecuted.

Fake news and conspiracy stories are celebrating a renaissance today. It does not hurt to take a sober look at Freemasonry, which is surprisingly diverse: there are more liberal and more conservative lodges, more Christian and more human-oriented, and of the 13 lodges in Hanover there are also two ladies’ lodges today. They all have one thing in common: dark plots are not dreamed of here.
