Just last year, the Grand Prix in Miami (USA) celebrated its debut in Formula 1. Now the track is under water – Sebastian Vettel already doubted it.

Miami – In fact, the Grand Prix of Miami (USA) is supposed to be held on May 7 after 2022 for the second time in the history of Formula 1. Right now, just a few weeks ago, the city in southern Florida was badly hit by flooding. As reported by local media, large portions of the area in and around Miami are currently under water – including the Miami International Autodrome area, where the Grand Prix will be held.

Heavy rain recently in Miami

In recent days, it has rained so much around Miami that entire homes and streets in the city have been flooded. Some drivers were unable to continue. There is currently no end in sight for the rains.

The background is that Miami, which is located in southern Florida on the Atlantic Ocean, is repeatedly experiencing floods due to heavy rains and sea level rise due to climate change. The city’s low elevation is also a problem: it is only two meters above sea level.

Vettel has already predicted the “first underwater Grand Prix” in Miami

So now track dumping may turn out to be a scenario that now former Formula 1 driver Sebastian Vettel brought to attention at last year’s maiden Grand Prix in Miami. The 35-year-old wore an eye-catching T-shirt and helmet throughout the race that read “Miami 2060. 1st Grand Prix Underwater. Work now or swim later”, in other words: “Miami 2060. 1st Grand Prix Underwater. Work now or swim later” .

He wanted to signal the urgency of taking measures to combat climate change, without which there would soon be no race like the one in South Florida. It is tragic that Vettel called 2060 the date of the “first underwater Grand Prix”, but his prediction that Miami will soon be underwater could be fulfilled much earlier. Vettel himself, who ended his career in 2022 and last drove for Aston Martin, has offered insights into his future plans after being a driver.

The Miami Grand Prix is likely to continue

The race at the circuit in Miami, which is always temporarily prepared for the Formula 1 Grand Prix and then dismantled again, is planned for May 5-7 and should be the fifth of the current season. It is likely to happen regularly, as the rain should have subsided by then, and Formula 1 officials have yet to comment on it. However, the current situation shows that the Miami Grand Prix may be history sooner than expected. (wuc)
