Sydney | Tournament in Australia: Kerber’s comeback looks even more solid

SYDNEY (dpa) — Tennis professional Angelique Kerber’s comeback plans after her baby break are getting more concrete. Organizers announced the 35-year-old had signed up for the United Cup ahead of the Australian Open.

Alexander Zverev, Tatjana Maria and Laura Siegemund are also slated to compete in the team tournament. Kerber’s hiatus began in the summer of 2022, and she became a first-time mother at the end of February.

Several weeks of training

Former Wimbledon winner Kerber has been working with her former coach Dorben Peltz again for some time and wants to return to the tennis tour with him after her baby break. The young mother has been training with a 46-year-old in Puszczykowo, Poland for several weeks. With Peltz, Kerber won the Australian Open and the US Open in 2016 and reached the top of the world rankings. The North German has coached the left-hander on several occasions since 2004. The most recent engagement ended in late 2021.

Her goals are “definitely titles and definitely big tournaments,” Kerber said of her ambitions in an interview with the German Press Agency this summer. She believes you can win Grand Slam titles as a mother. “But I know it’s an even longer and harder road than before,” he said: “But I believe anything is possible. You just have to have the courage to try it.”
