The magic of Switzerland! Many Germans think so, too. Switzerland remains the most popular immigration destination for Germans in Europe, the Federal Statistics Office announced on Tuesday. At the beginning of 2021, about 309,000 German citizens were living in the neighboring country. Compared to 2020, this means an increase of 0.7 percent. The number of Germans in Switzerland has been steadily increasing for years.
Austria ranks second. There were about 209,000 Germans living there in 2021. Compared to 2020, this was a four percent increase. Perhaps the first two places can be explained by the fact that migration is made easier by language and physical proximity. Spain came in third place with 140,000 Germans.
Switzerland is also on top when it comes to citizenship: Switzerland has also been the European country whose citizenship Germans have repeatedly obtained. Authorities registered 6,900 cases of naturalization in 2020 – a new record. This means that the number of Germans who obtained Swiss citizenship increased by 4.3 per cent compared to 2019. Sweden came in second place by a large margin, with 1,400 cases of naturalization from Germany.
