Salary dispute: Conflict with cockpit crews costs Aer Lingus Airbus A321 XLR title

The Irish were actually supposed to be the first operators of the new Airbus model. But because of a collective bargaining dispute with the Pilots, that didn't happen.

There have been no wage conflicts with Lufthansa cockpit crews only this year. Aer Lingus is also in a dispute with pilots. This now costs the airline a prestigious role. As reported by the CH Aviation portal, the Irish subsidiary of International Airlines Group IAG will not be the first operator of the Airbus A321 XLR as expected.

The group said Aer Lingus had been unable to provide IAG with “the necessary assurances on the cost structure to ensure the required returns on investment in the fleet”. Aviation portal CH. “IAG has decided that the Airbus XLR, which was scheduled to be delivered to Aer Lingus in September 2024, will no longer be awarded to Aer Lingus.”

The pilots want a 23.88 percent pay increase

They “will only invest in their fleet if it makes economic sense and a return can be made from it.” IAG has ordered fourteen Airbus A321 XLR aircraft. In fact, six of them are dedicated to the Irish and eight to their Spanish sister Iberia. It seems that the Spaniards will now receive the first of the new planes.

The dispute between Aer Lingus and the crew has now ended in the Irish Employment Tribunal. The union had requested a 23.88 percent pay rise, according to the Irish Times. Aer Lingus offered 12.25 percent over three years.
