The US Supreme Court delivers a landmark ruling to Trump today
The Supreme Court is expected to rule on Trump's pre-election ban in three states from 4pm Swiss time. The consequences could hit the former president hard.
The US Supreme Court could announce a much-anticipated decision on Donald Trump's presidential candidacy as early as Monday. On Sunday, the Supreme Court announced the next day's report from 4 pm Swiss time, without saying which case it would be.
However, observers expected it to be about the Colorado Supreme Court's decision that Trump's efforts to reverse the election results would have disqualified him from the Colorado primary, thereby disqualifying him from the presidency.
Trump was also barred from competing in the Illinois and Maine primaries. The former president filed an appeal, which the Supreme Court must now rule on.
Finish before Super Tuesday?
Monday's decision will be relevant because primary elections are held on Tuesday – known as Super Tuesday – in Colorado, Maine and several other US states. These parties themselves decide who will run for them in the presidential election. A Supreme Court decision before then will clarify whether votes for Trump will ultimately count.
The Colorado court cited Section Three of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which prohibits a person from running for federal office if he participates in, aids, or encourages an insurrection or insurrection.
Separately, the Supreme Court justices are still dealing with a second case that asks whether Trump can even be sued for election manipulation. A hearing is scheduled for the end of April.
