World champion Max Verstappen (Red Bull) starts from the start on Sunday. Lance Stroll (Aston Martin) surprises with third place in qualifying.

Suddenly it got dark in Interlagos: the long-expected rain fell in the final part of qualifying. The ten riders who made it this far only managed one fast lap before qualifying ended a few minutes before scheduled. Continuing would not have helped, because no pilot could improve his time under these conditions.

First and foremost, world champion Max Verstappen will start again for Red Bull on Sunday. The Dutchman had the best conditions in Q3 and recorded the fastest time. Things were not going well for his colleague again. Sergio Pérez had to brake due to the yellow flag, thus finishing the race only ninth on the grid.

In addition to Verstappen, Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), who will start on the front row alongside the world champion, also expressed his admiration. But the biggest surprise came from Lance Stroll in an Aston Martin. The Canadian had the third fastest time and will therefore start directly in front of his teammate Fernando Alonso, who is fourth. Stroll won the internal “qualifying duel” against the Spaniard for only the third time this season.

Alfa Romeo comes out early

For the two Hinwil Racing cars, qualifying ended after Q1. Guanyu Zhou finished 20th and last, and Valtteri Bottas will start two places higher on Sunday. Qualifying ended particularly disappointingly for Zhou after he had set the eighth-fastest time in free practice just hours earlier.
