According to their numbers, Sony PlayStation 4 has sold over 117.5 million units (as of March 31, 2022). Internally, this places it behind the PS2, the most successful gaming console ever.
So it is not easy to surpass these sales figures. Not even Sony president Jim Ryan believes the current generation can do that.
By the end of March, the PS5 had sold about 38.5 million units. During a recent investor Q&A, Ryan expressed confidence that he could top that with another 70 million sales. Accordingly, Sony expects the PS5 to fall behind the PS4. It was reported by many media.
However, the speculation is bold. After all, 70m is still just under double what has been sold since Leek. The console launched in 2020.
Ryan explains that they hope to bring a large number of PS4 players to the current generation. In addition, Sony likely expects to be able to win many new customers.
Sony has also confirmed that the PS5 has surpassed the PS4 in many respects, such as the sales figures at launch. The electronics group assumes that sales numbers will remain strong for a long time.
