- Cypriot Energy Minister Natasha Bieldo announced on the official radio (RIK) that natural gas deposits have again been discovered south of Cyprus.
- The Italian-French energy consortium Eni Total made this discovery during research.
- According to the minister, the gas field will contain about 70 billion cubic meters of high-quality natural gas.
In a statement, the Italian state-owned Eni spoke of an “important discovery” at a depth of 2,287 meters, about 160 kilometers off the coast of Cyprus.
The Italian newspaper “La Repubblica” saw that this is important news for Italian energy policy. But the discovery gives countries in Europe the opportunity to become independent from Russian gas supplies. However, another year will have to pass before funding can begin.
Turkey has blocked previous natural gas discoveries in Cyprus
As early as 2011, US company Noble Energy discovered large natural gas fields in the Cyprus Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) while drilling to the east of the current discovery. But since then, a row has broken out with neighboring Turkey over the exploitation of raw materials.
Cyprus has been divided into a Greek Cypriot part in the south and a Turkish Cypriot part in the north of the island since 1974. As long as there is no solution to the Cyprus question, Ankara prevents the exploitation of natural gas fields and the search for more deposits.
