France is horrified by a particularly brutal crime: near Bordeaux, a man shot and set his partner on fire, until she was burned alive, police announced Wednesday. A mother of three died on the street in the middle-class residential area of Merignac, west of Bordeaux.
According to police, the 44-year-old perpetrator initially followed the 31-year-old in the street and shot her in the legs with a rifle, and she fell. Then he poured it with a flammable liquid and set it on fire.
The killer was already in prison
Police arrested the man shortly after the crime, according to local media reports. The judiciary is investigating him for premeditated murder. According to Attorney General Frederic Porterere, the perpetrator was already known to the police for previous crimes. She added that he was sentenced to 18 months in prison in 2000.
The mayor of Merignac, Alain Anziani, said the woman’s death had caused a “great excitement” in the community of 70,000. The couple had three children, ranging in age from three to seven and eleven years. According to the police, they were not at home at the time of the crime.
