In the fifth match of the European Championship qualifiers, previously unbeaten Switzerland travel to Kosovo, which is still winless. However, the match should not be boring, especially after Switzerland drew 2-2 with Romania in their last international match in June.
Given its two-goal lead against the Eastern European team, Switzerland is still only two points ahead of the group runner-up and three points ahead of third-placed Israel. While the two chasers meet today, Switzerland can expand the gap in third place to at least five points if it wins. To qualify for the 2024 European Championship in Germany, it is enough to obtain second place in the group.
The duel between Kosovo and Switzerland is a special game because of the presence of many dual nationals on both sides. In the Swiss team, Xherdan Shaqiri, captain Granit Xhaka and Oran Beslemi have roots in Kosovo. Coach Alain Giresse’s team includes several players who grew up in Switzerland: Betim Fazligi, Ismail Beka, Fidan Aleti, Florent Haderjohnaj and Arianet Muric.
