Is Tesla becoming a monopoly when it comes to charging? – mobiFlip.de

There are several standards for charging an electric car, where in Europe the CCS connection has prevailed in recent years. It can be found on every Tesla, but the company uses its own standard in the US.

That’s a problem at the moment, as Tesla opens up its Supercharger network around the world. In Europe this doesn’t matter, you can drive any modern electric car to a supercharger and (if already unlocked) charge it.

However, in the US, the VW ID.4 cannot be fitted with an open supercharger as it has a different port. However, it is interesting that Tesla has not yet adapted to CCS, and other brands are now approaching Tesla.

Big electric brands go to Tesla

Ford, General Motors, and Rivian all announced in very short order that they would soon support Tesla’s NACS port. These are big brands in the US and with few more followers, maybe monopolies.

These brands depend on Tesla not only for charging standards but also for the charging network. There are voices that see various advantages in following Tesla, and that’s true here and there, but I’m not sure if depending on Tesla is really the right way to go right now.

However, Electrify America, a large US network of charging stations, is still unable to compete with Tesla, and since a good charging network is crucial for a new electric car, these brands are gradually moving into Tesla’s hands.

Now the question in America is who will come after these brands, and some manufacturers certainly don’t want it, but with every brand joining Tesla now, pressure is mounting from customers who want superchargers.

Germany is unaffected

For us in Europe, it doesn’t matter, CCS prevails there and won’t change for now. But it’s still a development that I’m excited about. But it also shows that many brands take the easy way out, because together we can definitely expand the CCS network very quickly.
