US extends exemption for Korean chip manufacturers
Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix could get an extension of the exemption to export US chip components to China for an indefinite period, according to the agency’s report.
The United States appears to want to extend indefinitely an exemption granted to South Korean chipmakers Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix to export US chip components to China. South Korea’s Yonhap news agency said on Wednesday that the US Commerce Department has discussed details with South Korean chipmakers about components that could be introduced into their Chinese production lines.
The agency quoted informed sources and added that the United States plans to make similar announcements early this week. Last year, chipmakers received permission from the US Department of Commerce to supply components for chip production in China for a year without having to apply for additional licenses. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix have so far declined to comment on the approval extension.
