Motorists were only able to use one lane on Monday after a portion of California's iconic Coastal Highway 1 collapsed. They slowly moved there in the morning (local time). California Department of Transportation spokesman Kevin Drabinski said monitors are on site to ensure road safety.
A huge piece of road collapsed into the ocean near the Rocky Creek Bridge, about 17 miles south of Monterey, after heavy rain over the weekend. There was a kilometre-long traffic jam. Up to 1,600 people were stranded in the small coastal community of Big Sur. According to Drabinski, many of them were able to leave when the road that had been closed overnight reopened on Sunday.
Kirk Gavel, manager of Nepenthe restaurant in Big Sur, said about a dozen of his employees were unable to leave town because of the road issue.
Some people spent the night in their cars. California resident Linda Molinari told KFSN-TV that she and her boyfriend slept in his truck after driving to Big Sur for lunch on Saturday.
