Hidden Animal: The Mystery Behind the Riyadh Airlines Logo

The new national airline from Saudi Arabia makes one of its appearances for the first time at the Paris Air Show. There is more to the Riyadh Airlines logo than meets the eye.

The second national airline of Saudi Arabia will not take off until 2025. Thus, the first Boeing 787 in Riyadh livery, which the company is currently showing at the Paris Air Show, is not the first in the fleet. The airline leases the Dreamliner with US registration number N8572C just to show the first two liveries.

It was also the Boeing pilots who flew the plane to Paris, Riyadh Airlines President Tony Douglas confirmed at a press event before the start of the air show. At the Paris Air Show, the Boeing 787-9 can be seen in a so-called static display, i.e. parked between other aircraft, but it will not be making any flight displays.

Not just an R

The logo of the new airline from Saudi Arabia is emblazoned on the engines and tail of the Dreamliner. At first glance, it appears to be simply the letter R, which stands for Riyadh. But there is more to it than that, Douglas explained.

“The logo uses the oval of the cabin window,” says the airline’s president. It is the lens through which you see the world. It features “a bird’s wings geometrically depicted in the shape of the letter R in classical Arabic calligraphy,” Douglas explained.
