Expansion: Stansted plans to expand the station

London Airport wants to expand its terminal. But Stansted is basically not interested in more passengers.

London Stansted Airport is a low-cost terminal scheme. Functionality and speedy processing were priorities when the Foster + Partners-designed airport was built. Lots of daylight, short distances, fast A to B.

Now, Stanstead thinks at least a little bit. The airport wants to grow by expanding the terminal – but not to increase capacity in the first place. According to the airport, the goal is to “give travelers more choice when it comes to dining and shopping.”

new technology

But not only more shopping and restaurants are planned in the larger building. The airport also wants to improve efficiency. The expansion will allow Stansted to incorporate the latest technology into its check-in and security areas. It should also be enlarged. New check-in machines and scanners should speed the way for travelers to the security area.

The airport has already tested the scanners, which are based on CT scan technology, as the rules for taking liquids with you are about to amend in the UK. Liquids and computers can remain in hand luggage from 2024 if the appropriate hardware is accessible.

The baggage handling system will also get an upgrade, and there will also be new lounges as well as shops and restaurants. The airport has submitted an expansion planning application. If given the green light, construction could begin in 2024 and is expected to take three years.

Stansted handled 26 million passengers last year. This was about the same as it was before the pandemic.
