Smithfield is on the Queensland coast at the corner of the Great Barrier Reef. Be it an athlete or a fan, almost everyone speaks in favor of moving to Australia.

Having hosted two UCI Mountain Bike World Championships and two World Cup races in the past, Smithfield has a solid place in mountain bike history. In addition, the standard downhill course and sections of the course used in the Olympic cross-country races can also be ridden by regular spectators.

Who to consider at Crankworx Cairns?

We’ll start with an all-male slopestyle tournament where competitors are invited based on the FMB World Tour rankings. If the names sound familiar, that’s because many of them were spotted at Crankworks Rotorua in New Zealand in March.

As usual he is the man to beat Emil Johansson. The Swede secured his second slopestyle Triple Crown in 2022 and won the opening round in New Zealand in March. German Eric Fedko Unfortunately had to sit out in Cairns due to injury. David Godzick, Nicholi Rogatkin and Frenchman Timothé Bringer will be up against him with good performances. Brit Tom Istedt will be more motivated after celebrating his first podium finish in Rotorua, having achieved an incredible world record with a nearly 40m backflip at the Freeride event in South Africa.

But aside from the slopestyle competition, countless athletes get their money’s worth in Cairns. Australians who compete in a variety of categories on home soil deserve a special mention here. There are some strong names on the women’s side including Caroline Buchanan, Harriet Burbidge Smith. In the men’s game, Jayce Gunning could be the man to excite the local fans after his sensational performances last year.

With the new Crankworks World Tour Downhill Championship and substantial prize money for the best downhillers, the races will be tough. In addition to some top Aussies like Tracey Hannah, the women’s category also features female riders like up-and-coming Brit Louise Ferguson or Caroline Buchanan. In the men’s race, Mick Hanna will be looking for a great performance to beat the likes of Sam Hill or Sam Blenkinsop.

Who has the best chance to win the titles King and Queen of Crankworks?

With the first Crankworks Festival behind us, the battle for the King and Queen titles is slowly but surely taking shape. A small reminder: points are awarded in all events and disciplines, while athletes with the most points win the title. As a rule, these are the riders who show the most consistency in the four Crankworks Festivals.

Two winners from 2022 currently lead the rankings — Boss van Steenbergen and Caroline Buchanan. The Australian player is second with 334 points, followed by the New Zealander with 290 points. Shania Rawson is third with 240 points. In the men’s category Van Steenbergen has 247 points ahead of New Zealand’s Tuhoto-Ariki Bene with 221 points. Sam Blenkinsop is third with 190 points.
