  • The European Space Agency (ESA) today published the first scientific results from the Euclid Space Telescope based on five images.
  • Within 24 hours, the telescope recorded more than 16 million objects, according to what the European Space Agency said about the mission, in which Swiss institutions are also participating.
  • New discoveries include newborn planets, extragalactic star clusters, and distant and bright galaxies.

The newly published data and images are just the beginning for ESA, and Francesca Lipori, a researcher at the University of Zurich, shares this optimism. The goal of the mission is to create the most comprehensive 3D map of the universe to date.

The probe aims to collect data on billions of galaxies. “Ultimately, we want to reconstruct the history of the universe,” Lepore says. The Swiss research projects will not focus on individual objects, but rather on the bigger pictures that Euclid will present.

The Euclid probe was launched into space at the beginning of July 2023. The centerpiece is a high-resolution telescope equipped with two cameras – one for the visible wavelength range and the other for the near-infrared range.

Within a single day, the telescope recorded more than eleven million objects in visible light and another five million objects in infrared light.

In addition to ZH University, the University of Applied Sciences of Northwestern Switzerland, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, and the University of Geneva are also participating in the Euclid mission.
