Australia reached the last 16 of the World Cup for the second time since 2006 with a 1-0 win over Denmark. “Footballs” have inspired great joy in their homeland. Thousands of fans celebrated once again at Federation Square, Melbourne’s largest square. It shows a video posted by the Socceroos on Twitter. It was four in the morning in Melbourne when the whistle blew at Al-Waqrah. Crowds of fans at Federation Square had already seen a 1-0 win over Tunisia in the previous group game.
The Australians entered the knockout stages of the World Cup for the second time since 2006 with a 1-0 win over secret favourites, Denmark. In between, the national team was eliminated three times in a row after the group stage.
As goalscorer Matthew Leckie said after the game, the team were “extremely proud” of what they had achieved. “We said from the beginning that we wanted to join this group. Of course, some people doubted that. Today we proved them wrong. The 31-year-old, who is under contract with Hertha Berlin from 2017 to 2021, also explained that the team with the best individual players on paper does not always win. There have been some surprises in the Cup. If you work harder than your opponent, you can move a lot.”

Coach Graham Arnold went into the game in a positive mood: “We’ve been working for this for four and a half years and you could see it in their eyes tonight that they were ready.” On Saturday (8:00 p.m. Swiss time), his team will compete in the second round of 16 after the clash between the Netherlands and the United States.
