Anyone who out-competes 3 of 4 machines in the all-around final at the World Championships deserves to win the gold medal. American Simone Biles was once again in a league of her own in Antwerp and won the world championship title with a superior overall score of 58.399. In doing so, she continues to write her own incredible success story: It is Biles' sixth all-around world championship gold medal, and 21st overall.
Already on vault, the first apparatus in her competition, Biles laid the foundation for the victory. The 26-year-old demonstrated the most demanding jump of the day with a difficulty value of 5.6 – and mastered it almost flawlessly. It received 15,100 points from the jury.
The exceptional American athlete continued her competition in a similar manner. A strong performance on the uneven bars, her weakest apparatus, was followed by an impressive performance on the balance beam, with Biles earning 14.433 points. Even before she hit the ground running, it was difficult to take the title away from her – yet she did better there. With 14.533 points, she was almost half a point better than the next best athlete.
A close duel for silver
Meanwhile, an exciting battle for second place broke out between Shelles Jones (USA) and Brazilian Rebecca Andrade. Before the final floor exercise, Andrade was 0.2 points behind Jones. The high performance was only marred by a roll after the final round in the row, which cost them valuable points but not the silver medal.
Since Andrade performed an exercise that was 0.6 points harder than Jones and also performed it cleaner, the American ultimately had to settle for bronze. The difference between the athletes ended up being 0.434 points. For comparison: gymnast Biles won by 1633 points over Andrade.
