Aleix Espargaro retires: his final season in MotoGP/MotoGP

This Thursday, ahead of round six of the 2024 MotoGP World Championship, Aleix Espargaro will announce his retirement as a MotoGP rider at the end of the season. In 2004, the Catalan competed for the first of the 326 GPs to date.

It is a coherent text. Aleix Espargaro chooses his motorsport living room and the site of his greatest MotoGP victories to announce his resignation as a regular MotoGP champion at the end of the current season. At the very least, as a permanent top-flight race, Sunday's Gran Premio will be its last race in front of the home team's fans.

The resignation is not surprising. The Catalan is in his twentieth season as a professional motorcycle rider. When he was 15 years old, Aleix Espargaro made his debut in the 125cc class on a two-stroke Honda RS 125 R. After a wild card in 2004, Alex competed in his first full Grand Prix season the following year and has been a consistent and important part of the circuit ever since. 125cc, 250cc, Moto2 and MotoGP in three stages of the rules – the 34-year-old family man has been active in all forms.

Alex celebrated his sporting achievement only in the fall of his impressive career. After a bitter drought at the start of the Aprilia MotoGP project, he and the team were able to turn things around. It wasn't until 2021, in the fifth year of his contract with Aprilia, that Espargaro reached his first podium with the RS-GP.

This was followed by the most successful year of his career. In 2022, Espargaro, who lives not far from the Circuit de Catalunya, finished fourth in the World Championship after 10 podium places, claiming his first ever MotoGP World Championship victory. #41 is also famous for his physique. Aleix Espargaro has been riding a race bike at a professional level for years.

An official statement about his future career as a racing and test driver will be issued from the track in Montmelo during the afternoon.
