Kim accused Seoul of missing an opportunity to improve relations two weeks ago, referring to the re-establishment of inter-Korean communication lines that had been cut for months. South Korea and the United States decided to “confront our country.” Just a day earlier, the influential sister of North Korean ruler Kim Jong Un, Kim Yo Jong, threatened North Korea with preemptive offensive capabilities due to military exercises in the neighboring country.
North Korea, largely isolated over its nuclear weapons program, regularly accuses the United States of preparing an attack through its exercises with South Korea. Seoul and Washington deny this. In recent years, the United States and South Korea have already scaled back some of the exercises for diplomatic reasons.
The armed forces of both countries have yet to comment on details, including the launch or size of the annual summer exercises. According to South Korean media reports, the two sides want to start an 11-day leadership training next Monday, which does not include field exercises. This week there is already a joint training session on crisis management.
