In the future, there should be more space for open forms of learning and project work in schools in Rhineland-Palatinate. “Tomorrow’s learning should not take place in yesterday’s rooms,” Education Minister Stephanie Haubage (SPD) said on Thursday in Worms at the launch of new school construction guidelines. “We consolidate zones rather than fixed rooms and thus create more flexibility.”
Concretely, this means that rooms can be oriented more closely to the pedagogical concept of the school, the Education Minister said. School building guidelines enable innovative learning concepts and community learning areas, thus replacing stringent requirements.
The state regulates the basic requirements for school construction in the School Construction Guidelines. This is to ensure that all schools meet educational requirements. The manual also sets out the conditions under which the state participates in construction work carried out by school authorities.

The state is currently supporting school authorities with more than 65 million euros through the state school building programme, Hobig said. In addition, there are funds for all-day expansion, funds from the Municipal Investment Program 3.0 and funds from the Municipal Investment Program for Climate Protection and Innovation, which explicitly provides for measures on school buildings.
“Direct blackboard-based teaching in traditional classrooms must be replaced by a fun, open learning environment and multifunctional classrooms,” said Klaus Peter Hammer, Regional Director of GEW. This requires a school structure that truly enables cooperative and individual learning, thus promoting problem solving and creative thinking.
It's not just about creating a suitable learning environment through renovations or renovations, Hammer cautioned. The most important thing is that the required space be related to the educational concept of the school. School district design should always be developed with the school community. Contemporary school construction guidelines should not be limited to definitions of square meters or number of rooms. News4teachers/With materials from EPA
