The Spanish footballers are entering the final for the first time in their third World Cup appearance. They beat Sweden 2-1 in the semi-finals in Auckland after an eventful final stage.
The decision came in the first World Cup semi-finals in Australia and New Zealand in a turbulent final stage. First, Rebecca Blomqvist equalized in the 88th minute for Sweden to level at 1-1.

Just a minute later, Spain captain Olga Carmona scored with a stunning long-range strike from the edge of the box to make it 2-1.

The first place in the final for the Spaniards, who eliminated Switzerland 5-1 in the round of 16, was well deserved. Coach Jorge Vilda’s team, which was controversial before the tournament, dominated the match for long periods but was unable to convert its superiority into goals for a long time. Salma Baralelo was a highlight for the Spanish team after her participation. The 19-year-old from Barcelona was responsible for putting the Spaniards up 1-0 in the 81st minute with a fine volley into the bottom corner.

In the final in Sydney on Sunday, the Spaniards have a chance to become the fifth country to be included in the list of World Cup winners after the USA, Norway, Germany and Japan. The opponents will be decided on Wednesday in a duel between jubilant hosts Australia and European champions England.
The Swedes, who knocked out defending champions America in the round of 16 and 2011 world champions Japan in the quarter-finals, had to bury their dreams of winning the title in their fifth semi-final appearance. For the 1984 European champions, it was supposed to be the second final of the World Cup after 2003. Four years ago in France, the Scandinavians failed in the semi-finals (then against the Netherlands).
