First round summary
Loc Meillard gets his first taste of a World Cup victory in a classic race in the night giant slalom in Schladming. After the first round, the guy from Neuchâtel is far ahead of Gino Caviezel.
Millard’s run on Planai conjured up the mirror, which put him at least a second behind the foreign competition. Only teammate Caviezel kept the gap reasonably within 64 hundredths.
With a double lead, the Swiss eased the fortunes of team leader Marco Odermatt in the best possible way. Odermatt, who had won four of the previous six giant slalom races in the winter, did not compete because he had to give his knee, which had been injured since Kitzbühel, more time to recover.
Norway’s Henrik Kristoffersen finished third, 1.06 seconds behind, followed by Austria’s Manuel Feller (+1.52 seconds) and Slovenian Zhan Kranjic (+1.65 seconds).
Livio Simonet (24), Thomas Tumler (25) and Simil Pesig (30) complete Switzerland’s pentathlon in the second run of the first lighted giant slalom away from R. The last Swiss double giant slalom victory dates back to March 2021, when Odermatt triumphed against Millard in Kranjska Gora.
