Severe wave of bronchiolitis
France activates an emergency plan for the respiratory epidemic
France has had its worst wave of bronchiolitis cases in ten years. The state is now activating the emergency plan.
The disease primarily occurs in infants and young children.
Due to a serious wave of respiratory illnesses in infants and young children, France has activated an emergency plan for all hospitals in the country. Health Minister Francois Brown said on Wednesday at the Paris Senate that there had not been so many hospital admissions for the bronchiolitis epidemic in ten years.
Therefore, all districts have now received increased assistance to support nursing staff and to ensure the care of children and families. The northern half of France is particularly affected. Bronchiolitis, like bronchitis, is a respiratory disease that primarily affects infants.
In the past week alone, 6,891 infants under the age of two and children with bronchiolitis came to the emergency room in France, health authorities said. 2,337 have been hospitalized as inpatients, 95 percent of whom are under a year old. (SDA)
