Argentina’s health authorities have made everything clear after several cases of fatal pneumonia: it’s because of Legionella, Argentine Health Minister Carla Vizzotti (50) said at a press conference in Tucumán on Saturday.
The exact type of bacteria has not yet been determined. A total of four people have died since Monday, who died of “pneumonia of unknown cause”, it was initially said. A total of 11 people were sick. All cases were found near a private clinic in Tucuman.
Health officials were trying to figure out the pathogen causing double pneumonia, which was accompanied by high fever and difficulty breathing. During investigations at a famous laboratory in the capital, Buenos Aires, coronaviruses, influenza A and B viruses and hantaviruses have already been ruled out as possible causes.
“There is no risk of a pandemic”
Legionella is a thermophilic bacteria that thrives in fresh water and can cause severe pneumonia when people inhale water contaminated with it in the form of tiny droplets. However, many infections are harmless and resemble a mild cold. The elderly and the frail are especially at risk. The infection can usually be well treated with appropriate antibiotics.
German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (59) was relieved at the Twitter SMS. “It is not a new pandemic. Lauterbach explained that this was going to go away. He responded to a tweet from Charity Leaf infectious disease scientist Eric (45) Sander, who was also relieved that the outbreak was caused by Legionella. “There is no risk of a pandemic,” Sander explained.
