China, under Xi Jinping, threatens countermeasures. This is after the United States wants to supply Taiwan with weapons.
China threatened to take countermeasures over the announcement of more US arms sales to Taiwan. In view of the developments, China will “resolutely take the legitimate and necessary countermeasures,” said Liu Bingyu, a spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in Washington on Saturday (local time).
He called on the US government to halt arms sales and military interactions with Taiwan “so that they do not cause further damage to Sino-US relations and peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.”
The United States supplies $1.1 billion in arms
The United States had previously approved $1.1 billion in new arms exports to Taiwan amid tensions with China, according to media reports. The package includes 60 Harpoon anti-ship missiles and 100 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles, as well as support for an anti-aircraft radar warning system.
The government of US President Joe Biden is justifying the new deliveries by increasing pressure from China on the DPRK, for example with an increased military presence in the air and at sea.
Tensions since Pelosi’s visit
China considers the democratically governed island to be part of the People’s Republic of China. On the other hand, Taiwan considers itself an independent country. The visit of US House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi (83), to Taiwan at the beginning of August led to serious tensions with China.
Beijing began large-scale maneuvers. A naval and air blockade and possible invasion were exercised. However, other delegations with American politicians traveled to Taiwan shortly thereafter. A Bundestag delegation would also like to go there this fall. (SDA)
