Just a week after finishing fourth in the world championships at Les Gets, Camille Balanche felt a sense of accomplishment.
Camille Balanche is the first Swiss woman to win the World Cup on the downhill. The 32-year-old from Neuchâtel had to shiver in the final in Val di Sol, Italy.
If world champion Valentina Hall, who ran last, had won the race, she would have overtaken Switzerland in the overall standings. However, the Austrian finished third, so Balanche’s fifth place was enough. Myriam Nicole of France won.
With consistency with the goal
Balanche got more than his luck. She was always on the podium in the first six stages of the World Cup and won three times. At the beginning of August, the 2020 world champion fell into training and broke her collarbone. However, a week earlier she was at the start of the world championships at the Les Gates, missing the podium by 0.758 seconds in fourth place.
Balanche has now been rewarded for her iron will with her overall World Cup victory. A year ago, the 2020 world champion finished third in the overall standings. Balanche only turned downhill in 2017.
