Explanation of droplet explosion

Swiss high school students are world champions of physics

Five Swiss high school students won the gold medal at the World Physics Championships in Timisoara, Romania. They defeated Poland and Singapore.

The five students presented their solution to the “droplet explosion” problem at the International Young Physicists Championship (IYPT). It comes down to describing the phenomenon that a drop of a water mixture on the surface of an oily liquid can break up into smaller droplets.

The solution presented by Jan Kamm (Kilchberg ZH), Anja Christina Duevel (Forch ZH), David Fankhauser (Baar ZG), Chengjie Hu (Zürich) and Joel Tan (Ottenbach ZH) convinced the jury more than it allowed Switzerland to defeat Poland and Singapore to win, The Pro IYPT-CH club also announced on Tuesday.
