In October, Britain’s Supreme Court wants to tackle the question of whether Scotland can vote again on independence from Great Britain without London’s green light.
The British Supreme Court said on Thursday that the hearing will be held in London on October 11 and 12.
Scottish Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon, who wants to lead her region back into the European Union as an independent country after Brexit, has appealed to a court to clarify the legality of a referendum without Westminster’s consent.
The reason is that the British government is firmly opposed to allowing Scots to vote again. Both sides will present their arguments in court in the coming weeks.
In the first referendum in 2014, a majority of Scots (55 percent) voted to remain in the UK. However, that was before Brexit, with the north of Britain rejecting it with a clear majority (62 per cent). So independence supporters hope that another referendum will change the situation.
Sturgeon has announced that the vote will take place on October 19, 2023, subject to the court order. If the Supreme Court finds a vote illegal, it wants to make the next British general election a de facto referendum.
