“Monster Caravan” becomes a problem for Pitton
Tens of thousands of people have marched to the U.S. border in Mexico. Some of them belong to the Quir community. They say bad things.
Two Venezuelan immigrants, Joel Garcia and Jason Madamoros, shut their mouths in protest of the negligence of Mexican immigration officials. Six men and a woman did the same in the southern Mexican city of Dabachula. Garcia and Madamoros left Venezuela because they felt threatened by homosexuals and hoped to be granted asylum in the United States.
But first they have to cross Mexico. Many anonymous immigrants describe to Latin American journalists and television reporters what members of the Queer community experience. “Mexican police officers spat on me and beat me.” “A group of young people fleeing to the United States caught me for twelve hours and raped me several times.”
Largest caravan for a long time
The media writes about a “giant caravan” or “monster caravan” that sailed from the southern Mexican state of Chiapas to the U.S. border. Estimates vary from 7,000 to 15,000, making it the largest refugee movement in years.
Most of the escapees were formerly from Central American countries, and according to the Mexican local newspaper El sol de Chiapas, 80 percent are now Venezuelans. The significant increase in Venezuela is related to the need for a visa to travel to Mexico from the beginning of the year. Those who do not get one – and there are many more – are trying to reach the US border illegally.
“I can live in hell.”
“The humiliation I experienced on the street in my hometown or when I walked into a bar, and often from my parents – I could live in hell too,” says one Venezuelan immigrant who considers himself part of a bizarre community.
According to US President Joe Biden, recent events in southern Mexico are bad news. If he portrays himself more humane to immigrants than Donald Trump, Republicans mock him as weaker. If he is determined, Democratic leftists will complain that he is as ruthless as his predecessor.
Migration is one of the big topics at the US Summit in Los Angeles. However, the final declaration of the 21 heads of state and government is unlikely to change anything. In the first quarter of the year, Mexican immigration officials arrested 77,000 illegal immigrants, more than double the previous year.
“Boundary closed”
Mexican migration officials were able to disperse the so-called Monster Caravan into small groups over the weekend. To this end, they have issued temporary residency permits to about 7,000 people in Mexico. But how did human rights activist Louis Garcia Villacron speak Spanish on American Broadcasting Univision? “Most will go directly to the U.S. border.”
An immigrant says he has heard that the US government is relatively generous in providing asylum to oppressed sexual minorities in their home countries. Meanwhile, U.S. Migration Officer Brian Nichols tells the refugee train: “The border is closed.”
