Basel’s performance at the small Krenz Stadium was never in doubt either. In light of the historic crisis that Basel is currently experiencing, the only thing that matters on Wednesday evening is moving forward. The bottom of the Super League achieved this goal at the foot of Mount Pilatus after 90 difficult minutes.

New coach Fabio Celestini, whose last win as coach was two years ago, decided not to make any major changes when he made his debut. Compared to the defeat in Lausanne at the weekend, the 48-year-old has moved his team up three places. The new coach on the bench refrained from making rotations – as is usual in matches against lower league teams – for justified reasons.

Along with Djordje Jovanovic, he was also a starter at the weekend who ended Basel’s 431-minute drought. Shortly before half-time, the Serbian forward headed home unanswered after a massive cross from Dominik Schmid, giving Bayern a 1-0 lead. The goal was deserved at this stage. Jovanovic had already forced Krenz’s goalkeeper, Lars Hone, to make a save (35). Shortly before the opening goal was scored, one of the Serbian goals was disallowed for offside.

Required temperature

Despite being at the back, it was Krenz who came out of the locker room the most active. The central Swiss side, who rarely ventured into the opposition half in the first half, played bravely forward and had some good chances. Marwin Hitz in Bayern’s goal successfully completed the mandatory tasks.

For its part, Basel failed to consolidate its progress and shifted into management mode. The closest thing to a 2-0 result came from Krenz’s Leandro Gobinelli, who headed the ball against the crossbar in the 72nd minute. Bayern achieved the victory with more or less confidence, and thus took the first step out of the crisis.

This is how it goes

The next test for FCB will be in the Premier League on Sunday. Basel welcome new arrivals Everdon in front of their home fans. The cup quarter-final matches are scheduled to be held at the end of February 2024.
