Zurich – ABB has secured a new $150 million order from Queensland, Australia. The Swiss company announced on Friday that it will provide complete traction packages, engineering and services for 65 six-car passenger trains.
The trains will be delivered in Australia as part of the Queensland Train Manufacturing Program (QTMP). As part of this plan, the Queensland Government has commissioned Australian infrastructure service provider Downer ETI Rail to deliver a total of 65 six-car passenger trains by 2032, the year of the Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games. They will then operate across the entire South East Queensland rail network.
Order from Hyundai Rotom
A type of train consists of several cars, each equipped with its own electric drive. ABB has received an order to supply train drives from Hyundai Rotom (Korea), a joint venture company of Downer ETI Rail.
As part of the order, ABB is now building a new factory in Maryborough, Queensland, to manufacture the drive packages locally. According to the announcement, the company is investing $6 million. Thanks to the so-called new competence center for the assembly and service of traction converters, motors and batteries, “more effective support for ABB customers in Australia and New Zealand” should be ensured.
