Thomas Tummler and Marco Odermatt completed their best season in giant slalom in different disciplines.

Next Saturday the World Cup final giant slalom will be held in Saalbach (Austria). Three Swiss are ranked in the top seven in the majors rankings, and one of them has already taken the small ball: Marco Odermatt. The man from Nidwalden could have the perfect giant slalom season.

This certainly doesn't happen every year and is more special than winning the ball.

Odermatt has won 9 out of 9 giant slalom races so far. On Saturday, he can crown his personal participation in the Winter World Cup with his thirteenth consecutive victory in this tournament and tenth this season. Even for Odermatt, it would be special: “It definitely doesn't happen every year and it's more special than winning the ball.”

The 26-year-old is right in this statement, because only one athlete has achieved this so far: Ingemar Stenmark (Sweden) completed the perfect giant slalom in the winter of 1978/79 with 10 victories in 10 races. Stenmark later also set the longest winning streak in a single discipline, winning 14 giant slaloms in a row.

Driving pleasure

The giant slalom race in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, was canceled last weekend. Odermatt used his non-race weekend, among other things, to go off-piste skiing and skiing in the forest. “It was the original fun of skiing, and it is still fun, although it doesn't help much in World Cup races,” says the man from Nidwalden.

Tomler: At the top of his game under Odermatt

A little out of the spotlight, which greatly benefits Odermatt, Thomas Tummler, another Swiss, showed a very strong performance. Tumler narrowly missed his first podium finish in over 4 years in the United States in the giant slalom races at Palisades-Tahoe and Aspen.

With these two fourth-place finishes, the 34-year-old from Gresons reached Group A of the World Cup final in Saalbach. “This is a dream come true and a consistent season,” Tomler says. He now ranks seventh in the discipline classification, making him the third best Swiss in this classification behind Odermatt and Loic Millard (third).
